History of Yau Ma Tei

Yau Ma Tei originated in a shallow anchorage and alongside this anchorage a market grew up in the 1860s.

In 1876, the Hong Kong Government resumed the whole town and laid out a new plan with wide streets (Temple Street and Shanghai Street), public facililities and at its centre the relocated temple. This new town continued to prosper.

By 1904, the Government reclaimed a huge area of the sea and added a vast typhoon shelter for the boat-people of the Harbour. With these developments Yau Ma Tei ceased to be just a town. It became an integral part of the ever-expanding city of Hong Kong and one of the busiest of the ordinary residential districts. Since 1946, the area has been subject to continuous redevelopment and only very few pre-war buildings now survive. Yau Ma Tei nowadays is a far cry from that of 1946.
